Apparently, there are many marine diatoms that live in tubes, but fewer freshwater varieties. I don’t have a species for these dainty little tube-canoes (I know nearly nothing about diatoms). They do not appear to be any of the freshwater species mentioned on the “Tube-dwelling diatoms” site (http://university.uog.edu/botany/Mar_…) It seems to be a Frustulia. I have read the Frustulia saxonica is a common tube-dwelling diatom, found in sphagnum, so perhaps that is a possibility.
